Teaching
As a member of the Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics Group in the School of Engineering Sciences I teach on the undergraduate Aeronautics & Astronautics course and on our Race Car Aerodynamics MSc. I also run the BAE System Virtual University Course in Vehicle Dynamics.
I am always exploring new ways to improve the learning experiences of our students. I was the lucky recipient of the first Royal Academy of Engineering/BNFL Education Innovation Prize in March 2006, and a Royal Academy of Engineering ExxonMobil Gold Medal for Excellence in Engineering Teaching.
Aeronautics & Astronautics
Our Aero & Astro course prepares our students for life designing and operating all sorts of air and space vehicles. I teach two first year courses: Introduction to Aeronautics & Astronautics, and Mechanics of Flight. You can find out more about these on our course programme website.
I also run individual and group design projects based around my research. This is typical at Southampton, as we are a research-led university. This gives students the opportunity to work on world-leading research projects with experts in their field. Alumni include Adrian Newey (F1), Peter Chandler (Deputy Project Pilot, Airbus A380), Martin Higgins (Red Arrows 2005-8), and many other stars in aerospace and motorsport.
Race Car Aerodynamics
The Race Car Aerodynamics MSc course at Southampton is the only one in the world completely focussed on providing students with the skills to become aerodynamicists in Formula One and other motorsport series. Graduates often go straight into Formula One; employment prospects are excellent in this highly competitive field.
I run the group design project, an example of which is shown here - CFD study of an open-wheeled race car. Lectures are given by technical directors and chief aerodynamicists from leading F1 teams. You can find out more on our website.
